The restoration of justice in East Timor shows what Australia is capable of doing in cooperation with other nations. We can be open and sharing. It is never too late to assume a new mantle. The tensions and uncertainties we face today, even the meanness and ineptitude we have shown in dealing with our major issues, also have a positive side-the so-called ‘window of opportunity.’ The problems have the potential to open up new channels of thinking, arresting the comfortable ways people previously perceived their world.
